Palestine at the United Nations

Each year, the United Nations General Assembly adopts 16 resolutions that emphasize the rights of the Palestinian people's inalienable rights; including the "Right to self-determination and establishing their independent state" and the "Right of return" and "The sovereignty over natural resources" and "The illegitimacy of settlement activity."

 

  • On 11/29/1947: The United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution number 181 which called for the partition of Palestine at that time under the British Mandate; for the establishment of two states: Palestine and Israel.
  • On 11/12/1948: The United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution Number 194 which provides the right of return and compensation for Palestinian refugees.
  • On 08/12/1949: The United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution Number (302 (5)) that established the United Nations Relief and Works Agency of Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).
  • On 10/14/1974: The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution that recognized the right of Palestinian people to self-determination and independence.
  • On 22/11/1974: The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution that recognized the PLO as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people; the organization has obtained observer status at the United Nations as a "national liberation movement."
  • On 02/11/1977: The United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution (32/40 B) that considered the 29/11 of each year a global day of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
  • On 08/20/1980: The United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution Number 478 which refused to recognize Israel's decision to annex Jerusalem; and considered it null, void and illegal.
  • On 15/11/1988: The National Council of the PLO declared the establishment of "the independent State of Palestine" and the acceptance of the United Nations Resolutions 242 and 383, which call for Israel's withdrawal from the Occupied Palestinian Territories in 1967; and to reach a solution through negotiation. At the time, the National Council instructed the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization to carry out the functions of the Government of the State of Palestine. Based on the Declaration of Independence, The United Nations General Assembly adopted replacing it from the PLO Mission to Palestine Permanent Observer mission.
  • On 12/03/2002: The UN Security Council adopted Resolution number 1397, which mentions the state of Palestine for the first time.
  • On 19/11/2003: The Security Council adopted Resolution number 1515 which called for the acceptance of the road map for peace, committing to it, supporting it and applying its components.
  • On 9/7/2004: International Court of Justice in The Hague issued an advisory resolution in which it confirmed that the wall established by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory is illegal; and required Israel to remove it; and affirmed the legal responsibility of the international community in helping the Palestinian people to reach their right to Self-determination.
  • On 23/9/2011: President Mahmoud Abbas submitted a request to the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon in order to get full membership for Palestine in the United Nations.
  • On 31/10/2011: Palestine got a full membership in the UNESCO.
  • On 03/22/2012: The UN "Human Rights Council" decided to establish an international investigation mission on the implications of the construction of Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.
  • On 29/6/2012: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) listed the Old City of Bethlehem and the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem on the World Heritage List.
  • On 11/26/2012: Mission of Palestine Permanent Observer to the United Nations distributed a draft resolution granting Palestine the status of (state (observer)) in the United Nations.
  • On 11/29/2012: The United Nations General Assembly voted to raise the status of Palestine to an observer state at the United Nations.
  • On 09/11/2015: The United Nations General Assembly adopted the draft decision of the Secretary General calling for raising the Palestinian flag over the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
  • On 30.09.2015 The Palestinian flag was raised in the headquarters of the United Nations along with the flags of other 193 member countries of the UN.
